Upon waking, Eragon finally feels safe in the crater. He worries for Murtagh though. He sees Solembum above him upon waking who leads him to see Angela after he is awake, the witch from before. He tells her about Brom’s death, which she had loosely seen before. She mentions his one success in killing Morzan and many failings, in his training, his protection of the egg, and in life. She speaks of the Shades and their horrible magic and how they are the worst enemies of the Varden. She describes how they are formed, giving their bodies over to evil spirits.
