Eragon, a young adult fantasy novel, is the first book in the Inheritance Cycle. It tells the story of a young boy named Eragon who hatches a dragon, Saphira, out of a mysterious stone he finds in the woods. Eragon bonds closely with Saphira and becomes a dragon rider, drawing the attention of the evil king Galbatorix, who sends his servants, the Ra'zac, to kill him. While escaping from the Ra'zac, Eragon and his mentor Brom become embroiled in plots against the evil king.

While stopping to drink and rest, the group comes across a man with a mace and his fellow horsemen. They surround Eragon and Murtagh and reveal that they are slavers, commenting on how horrible the two look. They comment on how much money they could get from Arya, sparking Eragon’s anger and an attack by him and Murtagh. They attack with magic, dragon, and physical might, scaring off the slavers. Knocked down by his own men, the leader of the slavers is on the ground when Murtagh strides over and beheads him, horrifying Eragon. Murtagh defends his actions while Eragon struggles with his feelings over the viciousness of the attack.
