Speak is a novel by Laurie Halse Anderson about a girl named Melinda who is raped and suffers post-traumatic stress disorder. During a party, Andy rapes Melinda, who immediately calls 911 but is unable to say anything. The police break up the party and Melinda's friends abandon her. Over the course of the novel, with the help of David and an art teacher, Melinda begins to deal with her trauma and depression, eventually telling the truth about what happened.
