Cloud Nine Study Guide

Cloud Nine

Cloud Nine by Caryl Churchill

The play Cloud Nine is a satire of colonialism and Victorian era values. Divided into two acts, the first part takes place in the 19th century in colonial Africa. The second act takes place in 1979 in London. The plot connects the oppression felt by people under colonialism to the oppression felt by women in a sexist culture. At times experimental, the play makes use of unconventional casting. For example, in the 19th century, the character of Betty is played a man. In 1979, she is played by a woman.
