In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there is a major trial (Salem Witch Trials) going on where several individuals are accused of witchcraft and conjuring with spirits. The play takes place in early America, 1692. At the end of the trial one of the main characters, John Proctor, makes a statement, A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything, I know it now. I beg you, sir, I beg you- see her for what she is...She thinks to dance with me on my wife's grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. but its a whores vengeance...-John Proctor. John Proctor was the most respected man in the community, until The Salem Witch Trials

I feel John Proctor is saying that God sees everything, know matter what and that he knows that all of these trials and innocent deaths are because of Abigail's revenge. Abigail is a 16 year old girl who is a liar and a manipulator. Abigail use to work for the Proctors, but Abigail was dismissed because she loved John Proctor and he started to liking her. Elisabeth Proctor dismissed her because of their feelings towards each other. Because of this, Abigail looked like a whore. Abigail was furious.
