Compare and Contrast: Science Fiction Essay

Futuristic worlds, advanced technology, and time travel are all different characteristics of great science fiction writing, but not all novels have them. According to your opinion what makes a great science fiction novel? Although both science fiction pieces, Among the Impostors and The Giver are both unique in their similarities and differences.

Luke Garner is a shadow child in Among the Impostors and he is in hiding all the time when he is at home. His family made the mistake of having a third child which is illegal in this novel. Luke tries his best to keep his family safe by not exposing himself but when an opportunity comes that is a chance of a lifetime he takes it. A family friend gets Luke a fake identity card and drags him off to a boarding house for boys. While Luke is their he gets picked on and notices that the school is very abnormal. Luke is willing to do anything to get out of the place but does not want to put his family in danger. When he finds a hidden door in the wall he decides to take the plunge and disappear through the door. That is where all of the science related activities begin. Luke is transported to a different world, where he enjoys being. He goes out there for a few hours every day and plants a garden. Luke comes out one day and finds his garden is destroyed. He hears voices and sees footprints. Luke jumps out from behind a tree and notices that the kids he sees look familiar and have some similar qualities of Luke. Are they shadow children to? Among the Impostors is a very good book but is a stretch for science fiction writing. Luke is involved in science by being transported to a different world where he finds other just like him. Science fiction is represented as very interesting in this well-written novel.

When you think of different topics involved with science fiction writing do you think of population and climate control, emotionless people, colorless community, and enclosed villages? The Giver includes all of these qualities and is a very well-written as well. Jonas, the main character, is chosen to be the new Receiver of Memories for his community. On his first day of training he receives many memories that no one else in the village has. Jonas learns that love is deep and doesnt understand why they dont have the feeling of love. The Giver tells Jonas of all the past controversy over memories and Jonas understands. But when he finds out that sameness was not always around he wonders why? The Givers author Lois Lowry does a fantastic job of incorporating many ideas of science fiction in her novel. Also, The Giver and Among the Impostors include many similarities. They both have a main character that is questioning his abilities and discovers a different world then he ever knew before.

Among the Impostors may be a stretch for science fiction writing, but through The Giver I get a feel for a great science fiction book. With different ideas and the same genre I was able to get very opposite problems which made for a good compare and contrast essay. I learned that you need to infer some things in a book to find out if they are similar or not!
