With Reference in ways Steinbeck presents the death of Curleys wife, Show how the characters react in different ways.

The first two Characters to find Curleys wife were Candy and George. Steinbeck uses imagery to portray how Candy reacts when he finds her, his face was hard and tight as wood, and his eyes were hard this gives us the idea that he is angry and is trying to bottle up his anger. We realise by the way Candy reacts that he cares about Lennie and George and doesnt want either of them getting hurt, sure george, sure, ill do that he tries to protect George from the rest of the ranch workers. Whenever George leaves Candy, his calm and reassuring ways turn into anger and sorrow, You god damn trap. The language used by Steinbeck also supports this as it says, he said viciously, his voice shook and his eyes blinded with tears he turned and went weakly out of the barn this shows us that Candy holds his anger and true feeling in so he protects George which portrays what a good friend he is.

Whenever George realises Curleys wife is dead, he know it was Lennie, he cares so much about Lennie and he tries to reassure himself that the other ranch workers wont harm him, Maybe theyll lock im up an be nice to im. We can tell that George is devastated my Lennies actions and is upset as he thought everything would work out, He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would

Whenever George is with the other ranch workers, I think he feels embarrassed and ashamed of Lennies actions as it says, his hat was so far down on his forehead that his eyes were covered this shows us he scared and wont make eye contact with the others. George is scared for Lennie, it seemed to take george some time to free his words. Throughout the novel Lennies and Georges friendship is obvious and even though Lennie killed Curleys wife, George still stays a loyal friend to him and tries to protect him he never done this to be mean. Steinbeck uses imagery to portay Georges feelings, his feet dragged heavily this tells us is upset and doesnt really want to go.

However Candys Calm reaction is a contrast to Curleys reaction, Curley doesnt even morn his wife, this is shown in the line 'Curley came suddenly to life' and his mind was more set on how he was going to kill Lennie than feeling upset he had lost his wife. He blames Lennie as soon as he sees his wife, I know who done it he reacts with anger, Im going for my shotgun. Ill kill the big son-of-a-bitch myself. Ill shoot im in the guts.
