Of Mice and Men

by John Steinbeck

A huge man was the first introductory phrase that Steinbeck use, to set a first site of Lennie. He goes into more detail shapeless face this made me think that he was a tubby man as huge does not state tall muscle or fat? Carrying it on slopping shoulders may mean lack of confidence, as the shoulders are not held high. Steinbeck also describes Lennie to a bear as he heavily drags his paws, paws meaning Lennies feet this sets the final picture into our head about the body of Lennie, a huge man with a shapeless face and slopping shoulders that walks like a bear dragging his feet as he walks.

Yet this does not explain his personality. As they stop in a clearing it says that Lennie dropped his bundle and flung himself down and drank from the surface of the green pool, this shows that he is not very observant as he drinks form a green pool which is dirty and the fact that he just flung himself down, there could have been anything underneath him. Steinbeck uses a long description to say how he drunk snorting into the water like a horse this shows that he is uncaring and almost childlike, he dabbled his big paw in the water and wiggled his fingers so the water arose in little splashes he seemed very pleased that he created little rings and said look George. Look what I done.

Lennie has a childlike mind whereas George is the complete opposite not just in appearance, but George was also smart and clever. Steinbeck made it seem that Lennie and George were dependant on each other for survival. George being parent of the relationship, his always in charge and makes all the decisions for the both of them. Lennie is like the child of the relationship as Steinbeck uses the mouse scene, where George asked Lennie to hold out his hand and give him the mouse - Lennies closed hand slowly obeyed. George took the mouse and threw it across the pool to the other side onto the brush - later on Lennie goes and get the mouse, George repeatedly throws it away and promises to get him a do to pet. This shows that Lennie does or always ends up doing what George tells him to and the fact that he finds it hard to think for himself.

George uses Lennie as well as taking care, as Lennie has the strength and George the will and mind power to do to do the job. Lennie only takes intrusion from George as he doesnt trust anyone else.
