The play I have studied is Romeo and Juliet by renowned playwright William Shakespeare. Through my study of this play I have learned about false romantic love when Romeo thinks that he loves Rosaline, conventional love between Paris and Juliet, true conventional love between Romeo and Juliet and filial love between the nurse and Juliet and Lord Capulet and Juliet. I will explain my answer fully in the body of my essay.

In this essay I learned about false romantic love when Romeo loved Rosaline. We see that Romeo suffered from unrequited love as Rosaline didnt love him back. He believes he must end a living death because of her rejection. When Benvolio tells Romeo that he will fall in love with someone else Romeo doesnt believe him and says One fairer than my love! The all seeing sun. Neer saw her match since first the world begun. Once Romeo sees Juliet he forgets about Rosaline Did my heart love till now? Because of Romeos fickle nature and Rosalines strong morals this relationship does not develop over the course of the play, but wanes very near the beginning of the play suggesting infatuation. We see that Romeo is more in love with the idea of love when he loves Rosaline but when he sees Juliet he falls deeply in love. This shows us that there is false romantic love in the play. It also showed me that you might love someone and they dont love you back.

I also learned about conventional love in the play. I learned about conventional love when we hear about Juliet and Paris in the play. Their relationship was common back then, where love is Bourne out of tradition, not passion. Paris asks Lord Capulet for Juliets hand in marriage. At the start of the play Juliet is open to marry Paris but after meeting Romeo she refuses Paris marriage proposal in making her a joyful bride, It is an honour that I dream not of. At the end of the play I learned that Paris cared about Juliet even though she didnt marry him when he stayed in the Capulet vault with Juliet. When Romeo came to the vault Paris fought with him as he didnt want Romeo to go near Juliet. Through Paris and Juliets love I also learned that matchmaking was acceptable and it was the father who chose who his daughter would marry.

Through Romeo and Juliet I also learned about true unconventional love. When Romeo and Juliet first met they fell in love with eachother. When Romeo sees Juliet he forgets about Rosaline. Did my heart love till now? Forswear it sight for I neer saw true beauty till this night. I learned that their love is romantic and forbidden. My only love sprung from my only hate. We can see that they are devastated when they find out that they are enemies. Can I forward when my heart is here?. Even though their families are enemies Romeo and Juliet get married as they love each other. Over the course of the play we see how they are unconditionally and irrevocably in love with each other and that they cannot live without each other. When Romeo thinks that Juliet is dead he immediately kills himself and when Juliet wakes up to find Romeo dead, she kills herself as well.

The last type of love that I learned about was finial love. We see this with Juliet and the nurse and Juliet and Lord Capulet. While Juliet does not appear to have a close bond with her biological mother Lady Capulet it is apparent that there is a close loving bond between Juliet and her surrogate mother the nurse. We see that there is a close bond between them as Juliet tells the nurse about Romeo and the nurse doesnt tell anyone. Although the nurse loves Juliet like a daughter some of the advice she gives Juliet is wrong. She tells Juliet to commit bigamy.

We also see that there is a close bond between Lord Capulet and Juliet. Lord Capulet loves Juliet and he doesnt force her to marry Paris at the start of the play like some of the other fathers would do. He tells Paris to woo her gentle and get her heart. When Tybalt dies Lord Capulet thinks that he is helping Juliet when he arranges a wedding for Paris and Juliet. Lord Capulet thinks that he is doing the right thing for Juliet and when she says no he gets angry and says things that he doesnt mean.
