Who is to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet?

Heres much to do with hate, but more with love (Romeo pg 742). While reading Romeo and Juliet, the reader begins to think about that is responsible for all of the tragedy and hate that is taking place. Even though each character contributes in some way, one feels that Tybalt is the one to blame for everything. Tybalts passionate hatred for the Montagues, his hot-headedness, and him not obeying his uncle and going after Romeo all affect the plot of the story greatly. I hate the word as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee (Tybalt pg 737).

Tybalt hates the Montagues with a passion, and he has no problem showing that. When he sees or hears a Montague, or anyone that is affiliated with them Tybalt is ready to fight to someone dies. This, by his voice, should be a MontagueNow, by the stock of my kin, to strike him dead I hold it not a sin (Tybalt pg 756). Even though both families, the Capulets and the Montagues are of the same status Tybalt feels that the Montagues are below him. It fits such a villain is a guest I will not endure him (Tybalt pg 758). When Romeo shows up at the Capulets party it increases the hate that is inside Tybalt. This is a Montague, our foe, a villain, that is hither come in spite to scorn at our solemnity this night (Tybalt pg 757).

Not only does Tybalt hate the Montagues, he also like to fight and argue with them and anybody associated with them. Tybalt is a very skilled and clever fighter, so when news comes that he wants to fight Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio (friends of Romeo) become worried. More than Prince of Cats. O, hes the courageous captain of compliments. He fights as you sing pricksong he rests his minim rests, one, two, and the third in your bosom!..(Mercutio pg 777).

Everything becomes worse after Tybalt kills Mercutio in a fight, which in turn caused Romeo to kill Tybalt in revenge. Alive in triumph, and Mercutio slain? Away to heaven respective lenity, and fire-eyed fury may be my conduct now!...Is but a little ways above our heads, staying for thine to keep him company. Either thou or I, or both, must go with him(Romeo pg 793). When Tybalt senses an opportunity to fight with a Montague he takes it. He does not like to be provoked by anyone, but especially anyone associated with the name Montague. O calm dishonorable, vile submission! Alla stoccata carries it away. Tybalt you ratcatcher, will you walk?(Mercutio pg 792).

When Tybalt wanted to confront Romeo at the Capulets party his uncle told him not to, but he refused to let it go. If Tybalt had left Romeo alone the hate between the two families would not have grown. Tybalt, the kinsman to old Capulet, hath sent a letter to his fathers house(Benvolio pg 777). At the party Capulet stated that he has not heard anything bad about Romeo and gives a hint that his attitude about the Montagues are changing with his tone of voice. And to say truth, Verona brags of him to be a virtuous and well governed youth. I would not for the wealth of all this town here in my house do him disparagement(Capulet pg 757). If Tybalt never tried to fight Romeo, Mercutio would have never gotten killed, which means Romeo would not have had to kill Tybalt and be banished from Verona.

Even though all of the characters in the play had a small role in who is to take the blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet Tybalt was the most responsible because he hated any and all things Montague, he was a hot-headed person, and he disobeyed his uncle and went after Romeo. For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households rancor to pure love.(Friar Lawrence pg 776)
