Romeo and Juliet

In this essay I will be comparing the fight scene and the ballroom scene in Baz Lurmans Romeo and Juliet. In the fight scene it is set in a petrol station when the Capulets and the Montigue meet and have a shootout.

The music and sound effects in the play in the start of the fight scene when the Capulets get out the car, the sound effects make a swishing noise as the camera zooms in onto his guns. This creates a big deal of suspense not knowing what is going to happen next, it sets a sort of country and western theme because of the music.

The costumes the characters wear play a very big part in the film because they show who the vindictive guys and the good guys are. The Montague wear really casual and colourful clothes where as the Capulets wear black cloaks with metal heals on his shoes, showing that the Monatagues are the peace keepers out of the two families.

Some of the camera shots used in the film create tension and suspense, when Romeo is hallucinating from the effect of the drugs the camera spins and creates an effect that he is going to pass out, or going to go crazy. Whereas when the Capulets get out of the car it zooms into Tiybalts shoe as he grinds a match between his foot and the ground.

The symbolism thats in the film goes on to show who is the good guy and who is the bad guy between characters, like the western music symbolises the bad and the rock symbolises the good. Same goes with the clothes the bad guys wear the dark clothes and the good wear the colourful clothes, this determines the roles between the characters.

In the love scene Bazz Lurman was trying to create quite a romantic atmosphere by putting in lots of kissing and cuddling, there were times it was also quite secretive, as they were always running around trying not to be seen by anyone. This created the suspense of them getting caught.

Also in the love scene the music is very romantic minor scale and the crowd noise is not always played. This creates a very romantic effect showing lots of love at first sight, nothing compared to the fight scene where the music was western in the major scale.

The costumes in the love scene for the men are old fashioned knights costumes and the women were like queens dresses. This is totally opposite to the fight scene where they were wearing new 21st century clothes giving the effect that Romeo is going to be her Knight in shining armour.

The camera shots and spins in the love scene are quite slow and go with the music in a way that the spins and close ups all happen very slowly setting the mood and giving the effect that it was love at first sight.

In my view of the film I dont think there were many differences, because they both had two different costumes for each set of characters in both scenes, but I think the main differences are in the fight scene. There is lots of violence but in the love scene most of the characters were getting along ok.
