The Rules of the Game

In this story, a little girl named Mei Mei wants to free herself from her moms overprotective attitude. This essay will include Mei Meis internal and external conflicts. It will also review some Chinese stereotypes in the story, similar situations and for advice for Mei Mei will be offered. Finally, Mei Meis dream at the end of the story will be analyzed.

The main conflict of the story is split into two categories: internal and external conflicts. An internal conflict that Mei Mei has is that her mother is trying to show about her daughter to everyone. Another internal conflict that she has is that while Mei Mei is trying to be hip her mother wants to make her daughter be old-fashioned. An external conflict that she has is that she wants to become a real good chess player.

In the story, there were many Chinese stereotypes. For example, one is that Chinese people eat nasty and weird foods. My bowl was always full, three five-course meals everyday, full of mysterious things I didnt want to know the names of. Another Chinese stereotype is that they are torturers. Supposedly, Chinese people are also very smart. Another example of a Chinese stereotype is that they own businesses and in the story there are stores that are mistaken for pet shops.

There are many similar situations that have happened to Mei Mei, that have happened to me also. One time I wanted to got o a party and my mom didnt let me because she didnt think I was responsible enough.

Mei Mei has a dream of her and her mother playing chess. Her mother is pushing Mei Meis chess pieces of the chess board. That represents her mother telling her what to do and being over-powering. Mei Mei tries to fly well she flies away to escape her mother and finally be independent.

In conclusion, I would like to give Mei Mei some advice, the words of wisdom I would like to give her is to sit down with her mom and just talk about how she feels about everything. To the mom, I would tell her to just let go a little bit. Her daughter is growing up and is going to be on her own soon, so she should just let go and be less protective over Mei Mei.
