The Road, The Wasp Factory and The Road not Taken.

In The Road, The Wasp factory and The Road not taken the contrasting theme is journeys, journeys of peoples experiences and fight for survival.

The Road is a 2006 novel by American writer Cormac McCarthy. It is a post-apocalyptic tale of a journey taken by a father and his young son over a period of several months, across a landscape blasted by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed all civilization and, apparently, almost all life on earth.

In The Road the novel tells of a father and sons journey across a devastated America. It is a journey fraught with dangers, the biggest of which seems to be other survivors. In the Road the Father and son are on a journey for survival though the harsh bleak world they feel they are stuck in with their main fear being other people. As they journey to the coast in search of something, the father tells the boy it is better to have nightmares because when you start dreaming, you know the end is near. We see the story of Frank who takes us on a journey though his weird and scary life.

The wasp factory was the first novel written by Iain Banks in 1983. The novel was written from a first person perspective, told by a sixteen year old boy called, Frank Cauldhame, describing his childhood and all that remains of it. Frank observes lots of rituals of his own invention, and it is soon revealed that frank was the perpetrator of three deaths within his family all other children and all before he reached the age of ten. The Wasp Factory is also a journey, as the main character, Frank waits for the arrival of a family member, who should not be coming at all. The novel overall is a seach for knowledge, an unearthing of deep dark family secrets, a tale of maturity and growing up and a journey of his life.

The title The Wasp Factory in the novel is a huge clock face encased in a glass box and salvaged from the local dump. Behind each of the twelve numerals is a trap which leads to a different ritual death for the wasp that Frank puts into the hole at the centre within tubes. Frank believes the death chosen by the wasp predicts something about future.

In The Road Not Taken the poem is about choosing which path to take, Two roads diverged in a yellow woodland sorry I could not travel both this is Robert Frost reminiscing why he couldnt take both and whether or not he took the right path. This also relates to the theme of journeys because it follows his journey down one of lifes paths he chose.
