This adventure takes place during a glorious era in Narnian history. It commences in Calormen, a small town by the sea, leading all the way north up to Archenland, then Anvard and last, the magical land of Narnia.

The main characters in this book are Shashta, an adolescent boy, who was adopted by a Calormene man, his Narnian horse Bree who can speak English, along with a rich princess, Aravis, and her Narnian horse, Hwin.

Shashta longs for freedom as he becomes aware of the fact that his father is going to sell him off as a slave. At that very time he meets a talking horse (who he later named Bree) and he is suffering from slavery. They both do not want to suffer the same outcome, so they use their cleverness and make a strategy to escape north, to the wonderful land of Narnia. While escaping they meet Aravis, a princess who has disguised herself, and she is escaping as well because her father wants her to marry a wealthy prince. Like Shasta, she has a Narnian horse, Hwin. So they join up and are together going to escape to Narnia.

They wanted to be least noticed by people, but the first hurdle in their run came at Tashbaan, a town flooded with people and racism. Shasta (who was considered a pauper by his looks) was taken in custody as he spoke rudely to a lord. However it was his luck that his faced was indistinguishable from that of a prince, and thus he was given the finest of treatment and also overheard many important things. When the real prince showed up, he (Shasta) broke out and head for where their lot had planned to meet if they parted. One the other hand Aravis met a really good friend of hers soon after they and Shasta had separated. With her help, she was able to gain knowledge about the war that the Kings of Tashbaan were planning against the Narnians, and was also able to break to the meeting spot.

When they met, they told each other what had happened, and realized that the next thing they had to do was to inform the Narnians about the upcoming war. They had a desert they had to cross, which they did cross with great difficulty. They had reached Archenland (all people living here supported the Narnians), and informed the people about the war. They then moved on to Narnia with help of the King of Narnia, the great lion, Aslan. After they notified the Narnians about the forthcoming battle, the Narnians gathered their army and together they head for Anvard where the war was going to take place. Unaware of the fact that Shasta was just a normal boy, they put him in war. He fought hard and despite his lack of skills, he put in great effort and contributed a great deal. All their hard work paid off as they gained triumph in the war.

Soon after the war concluded, Shasta met his real father, King Lune, who enlightened him with the fact, that the identical face prince who he had met in Tashbaan, was his twin brother, and that his name was not Shasta, but Prince Cor. Narnia survived the major threat and restored its peace thanks to Shasta, Aravis and their horses. A few years later, Prince Cor married Aravis, and after his fathers death, they became king and queen. Bree and Hwin were delighted as well as they were living in their homeland of Narnia. And like always, THEY ALL LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER.
