The Bacchae

The Bacchae by Euripides

The Bacchae is an Ancient Greek tragedy by Euripedes that tells the story of Dionysus' attempt to found a cult for himself in Thebes and exact revenge upon King Pentheus for opposing him. Pentheus captures a disguised Dionysus and later, after Dionysus escapes from prison and supernatural events begin occurring, Pentheus tells Dionysus he wants to see what is happening. Dionysus has Pentheus dress up like a Maenad to spy on them. However, Dionysus reveals Pentheus to the possessed Maenads, who tear him to pieces.
