Bernice Bobs Her Hair

Bernice Bobs Her Hair by F. Scott Fitzgerald

In the short story Bernice Bobs Her Hair, Marjorie teaches her socially awkward cousin, Bernice, the ways of the world. But, Marjorie's intentions aren't necessarily kind or pure, as she convinces Bernice to cut off all of her hair and the resulting hairstyle is a disaster. In response to the betrayal of her cousin and the social rejection she experiences, Bernice chops off Marjorie's hair before running off into the night. Long hair acts as a symbol of the women's power and femininity.
