Astrophil and Stella

Astrophil and Stella by Philip Sidney

Astrophel and Stella is a 16th-century sonnet sequence by Philip Sidney that was published posthumously. Though it is not known precisely when they were written, they were first published in 1591. The sonnet sequence contains 108 sonnets and 11 songs employing the Petrarchan rhyme scheme. The sonnets concern the love of Astrophil ("star lover") and Stella ("star") and a loose narrative involving the two. Themes of love, desire, poetry and the act of creation prevail throughout the sonnets.
