A Grain of Wheat by Ngugi wa Thiong'o

A Grain of Wheat is a 1967 novel by Ngugi wa Thiong'o that follows several stories during Kenya's struggle for independence in the 1950s. One story follows the couple Gikonyo and Mumbi. After Gikonyo is sent to a concentration camp, Mumbi betrays him and sleeps with his rival and ally of the British, Karanja. In another story, Mugo is a hero in the concentration camp who later betrays one of his fellow rebels to save his own life. The book contains themes of loyalty, betrayal, oppression and colonialism.
