Faust

Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Faust is a two-part tragic play about Faust's quest for ultimate truth and his dealings with the devil, Mephistopheles. Mephistopheles appears before a despairing Faust and they agree: if Mephistopheles can completely satisfy Faust, he agrees to die immediately. Mephistopheles helps Faust seduce Gretchen, who inadvertently kills her mother, whose brother dies in a duel with Faust and who is finally convicted of murder for drowning her illegitimate child. Part II of the play takes place in five isolated fantastical episodes and ends with Faust's redemption and ascent into heaven.
