A Single Shard is a 2001 novel by Linda Sue Park about an orphan named Tree-Ear living in 12th-century Korea. Tree-Ear lives under a bridge with a cripple named Crane-man. One day, Tree-Ear is sneaking around the pottery studio of Min when Min catches him and Tree-Ear accidentally breaks one of the pots. To repay him, Tree-Ear begins working for Min, eventually going on a journey to prove Min's skill to an emissary, thereby allowing Kim to get a commission. Eventually Tree-Ear returns and becomes Min's apprentice.
