We is a dystopic novel by Yevgeny Zamyatin censored in the Soviet Union about a totalitarian society called the One State that controls every element of its citizens lives, rejecting emotions in favor of rationality. D-503 is a physicist and engineer of the spaceship the Integral and throughout the course of the novel has an illegal affair with I-330, who is involved in a plot to overthrow the government, which, in the end, remains ambiguous. Through mathematical metaphor, D-503 relates themes of freedom, oppression, emotion and history.
