Heart of Darkness is a novel about Charles Marlow and his experience in the ivory trade in the African Congo. Marlow travels upriver to the ivory company's station, where a company agent, Mr. Kurtz, is running the operation. Marlow hears many things about Kurtz: that he is respected, feared, amazing and horrible. Finally, Marlow arrives at the station and learns of Kurtz's inhumane treatment of the natives. Kurtz dies on the boat back down the river and Marlow returns to England, telling of Kurtz and the horrors he witnessed.
