Babbitt Study Guide

Babbitt

Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis

Babbitt is the story of a successful realtor, the eponymous Babbitt, whose complacency with and then frustration toward the monotony of his suburban life lead him to attempt to break out of its confines. Eventually, Babbitt's transgressions cause his friends and family to treat him with trepidation, but his wife's sudden illness grounds him and allows him to rejoin his former life. He remains possessed of a free spirit, though, and refuses to conform in his heart.
