Why I Live at the P.O. is the story of a woman known only as Sister, postmistress of a small town, and of her relationship to her family, especially to her sister Stella Rondo. When Stella Rondo returns home divorced and with a child Sister believes is a bastard, conflict erupts in the home. Sister, prurient and unpleasant, is the source of the unrest and soon her family cuts ties with her, forcing her to take up residence in the post office where she works.
