"The Story of an Hour" is an 1894 short story by Kate Chopin. Louise Mallard is a frail woman with heart problems whom Josephine, Louise's sister, informs of her husband's death in a railroad accident. Josephine breaks the news to her gently and Louise locks herself in her room to mourn, but soon begins to feel free and enthused. In the end, it turns out that her husband did not, in fact, die. Louise is so shocked by this news that she dies.
