The Jew of Malta is 16th century play by Christopher Marlowe about the antagonism between Jews and Christians, with themes of revenge and power. Barbaras is a wealthy Jewish merchant whose wealth is seized by the Maltese governor to pay tribute to the Turks. Barbaras seeks revenge, recovering some money, bringing the governor's son and friend to die in a duel, and killing his daughter after she converts to Christianity and enters a nunnery. Eventually Barbaras helps the Turks raid Malta, Barbaras becomes governor and is subsequently killed.
