A Crown of Swords is a novel in The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. The novel deals the political and military events of a fantastical world and has three main plots. One follows Rand al'Thor, who attempts to stop nobles from rebelling and eventually wins the Crown of Swords in a duel. Egwene al'Vere and Siuan Sanche's attempt to exercise power over the rebels. The third plot follows four characters' search for the Bowl of Winds in order to stop the unnatural heat plaguing their city, Ebou Dar.
A Day No Pigs Would Die is the autobiographical story of Robert Newton Peck, a Vermonter born in the early 1900s, and his childhood during the Depression. The story follows Robert and explores his bond with his pet pig, Pinky. Eventually, economic necessity drives the Peck family to slaughter Pinky for meat, and Robert must come of age to cope with the trauma. The novel is a graphic look at the relationship between fathers and sons and men and animals.
A Kierkegaard Anthology is a collection of works and excerpts by the 19th-century Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. Kierkegaard was a religious existentialist who believed that private Christian faith was the highest path for man and the only salvation from despair. Kierkegaard wrote under a number of pen names, writing from alternate perspectives such as the hedonistic aesthetic and the dutiful ethical man to examine different life philosophies, their advantages and fundamental flaws. Kierkegaard was critical of state religion, idealism and science, instead centering his philosophy on subjectivity and faith.
After the First Death is a novel by Robert Cormier, published in 1979. The novel follows the events of a terrorist hijacking from multiple perspectives. A summer camp bus full of kids is hijacked by a group of terrorists led by Miro. Kate, the bus driver, is ordered to drive to a railroad bridge, where a siege begins with the police pitted against the terrorists, who demand freedom for their homeland. The suspenseful plot draws out themes of courage, sacrifice and resistance.
