The Eyes of the Dragon is the story of Peter and Thomas, the two sons of old King Roland of Delain. Peter, the eldest, is first in line to become king, but is framed for the murder of Roland by his adviser, Flagg. Upon Peter's imprisonment, the weak and easily influenced Thomas becomes king, allowing Flagg to become the ultimate power behind the throne. This fantasy novel explores the ideas of power, corruption, and good versus evil.
Fathers and Sons is a novel about two young men, Arkady and Bazarov, who have recently graduated from the University of Petersburg and travel to the countryside to visit their families. The two men quarrel over several women they fall in love with and, in the end, Bazarov dies of typhus and Arkady marries one of these women, Katya. The novel examines the generational differences in Russia at the time, between the old generation and a younger generation of nihilists. The novel presents love as a redemptive force.
Told through a series of "progress reports" written by the main character Charlie, Flowers for Algernon examines the potential for science to benefit humanity, as well as cause considerable harm. The novel also offers a critique of the treatment of the mentally disabled. After undergoing an experimental surgery, Charlie, who was mentally disabled, sees his IQ triple. With his higher intelligence, Charlie is able to live a full adult life. But, the effects of the surgery prove to be temporary and Charlie soon returns to his initial intelligence level.
