Fahrenheit 451
In a relationship especially in a marriage what is expected of the couple is to interact with each other, help each other with their problems, and try to be involved with their partner's life as much as is expected. The opposite of marriage is the unexpected such as, not communicating to their husband/wife , not interacting with their partner, being ego-centric and stubborn. Fahrenheit 451 is a novel about Guy Montag, a fireman and his duty is to complete the fulfillment of burning books in a futuristic American society. In this era, firemen ignite the fire rather then putting it out. Montag is conflicted with his needy wife, and feels she never listens to him. Her main concern is having more televisions in the house and her everyday shows. It is more than obvious their marriage is corrupt and evidently pointless.
Montag and Mildred's relationship is none existent. They both share the mutual feeling of not caring for each other. Mildred's day consists of abusing drugs and watches television on a regular basis. Montag is more interested in Clarisse than he is in his own wife. Their marriage is very typical in their culture and their family is plainly artificial. There is no bonding with the spouses and television is much more preferred importance than each other, this however, is connects with our own society today.
The Montags do share a peculiar marriage. Marriage is just a label or a title for these two people. Montag works from dawn to dusk as a fireman burning books, while Mildred only watches excessive amount of television or has seashells in her ears where she listened to radio with. They both have no relationship within each other; their lives are so irrelevant to have a possible connection with one another. Their relationship appears strained, or with zero amount of affection. They rarely speak to each other, but when they did it consists of silly things or just typical arguments. She had no interest for him; there was clearly no love involved only seclusion. Mildred was never able to have children because she did not desire for any. One night when Montag returned home from work, he discovered something wrong with Mildred, she tried committing suicide. This meant her life was based on a platform of nothing, she had no life. Her life revolved around a lit screen. Montag was met a 17 year old girl on his way home, it was then that he realized he did not care for Mildred. There was no hope, reconciliation, or even communication among the two of them. Page 13 Mildred(there was only the singing of the thimble. Wasps in her tamped -shut ears, and eyes all glass, and breath going in and out softly, family, in and out of her nostrils, and her not caring weather it came or went , went or came.) Mildred had no care in the world for herself or her husband weather she was alive or not.
Their marriage is natural relationship in their culture. There is little to none emotion in their society. People will rather take part in their own personal interest than spend time with their own family. Every thought or feeling was interrupted with the constant din of the television. Page 72(of course I'm happy. What does she think I'm not?) Montag thought about what Clarisse had asked him because he was realizing the truth which was him not being happy. People in their world, would put aside their family for the satisfaction of technology instead.
Families in Montag's society were artificial. If family in their society would have cared they would have spend more time with each other and less time focusing on television, drugs and radio. Page 77 Montag to Millie(Millie does your family love you with all their heart and soul, Millie?) Millie stood speechless because the answer was evident. She knew her family cared more about the parlor, drugs, television and the radio. In this society families or marriages did not exist.
