Penelope the wife of Odysseus is believed to be a very strong character in the book The Odyssey. She shows the characteristics of a strong person in her role. A strong character achieves many great characteristics. She has perseverance, faithfulness, and respect. What every strong character in any type of story needs. She keeps her word in everything she had promised Odysseus before he left for his journey. The three traits can be best described in these ways.

The first characteristic Penelope entitles is that she is a faithful wife. She shows this by staying true to Odysseus while he is on his journey. She warded off many suitors in keeping he promise to him. She thought of challenges and ways to stall the time while she waited so the suitors would not get violent at her. Even though she was tempted by the suitors she still kept the promise saying that if Odysseus was not home by the time Telemachus had become a man and grown a beard that she would have to re-marry to another man.

The second characteristic Penelope entitles is that she has great respect. She had kept her temper and dealt with the suitors while they were in her home. They tore up her belongings and stole her food and water, but she still treated them with kindness and great respect that you would show a guest. Her refrained from commenting to the rude jokes and remarks made at her and went on wishing for Odysseus to return. Although they treated her badly she did not treat them the same.

The final characteristic that Penelope entitles is the she has the gift of perseverance. This by definition means she can hold out for periods of time. She never gave on Odysseus returning back to her. An example pulled form the book, says that she believed that Odysseus was coming back to her so greatly that she promised the suitors that when she was finished making a tapestry she would choose a man to marry. Every night she would tear apart the tapestry so she never would be finished with it. Therefore she would never choose another man to marry. And that way she was patient until he returned home to her.

Penelope has many characteristics of a strong character. Including perseverance, faithfulness, and respect for others. She shows these in many parts of the book, mostly in Part II of The Odyssey. She kept her word in everything she had promised Odysseus before he left for his journey. After 20 years she had gone through much and that also as a conclusion made her a strong character.
