Crazy

William Faulkner, the author of A Rose for Emily paints a tale of an elder Negro woman who will go through great links to get what she wants. One might think to do the things she did, that one would have to be crazy. I myself personally think that Emily had a couple screws lose in her head.

Was Emily domed from the start? One would believe that if you have family before you that are insane, the odds go up that a family member later in life would also become insane. This seems to run true in Emilys case. Emilys great Ante Wyatt became completely insane and the whole town knew this.

Emily owns this huge house. Its the house her dad owned before and the house that she grew up in. If one doesnt want to pay taxes on their house then that is there decision. If one owns a house in most cases there will always be taxes on the house that you have to pay yearly. But there is a difference between refusing to pay taxes and believing that you do not have any taxes. Even after she received a letter from the mayor stating that she owed money and after the city authorities spoke with her at her house showing her documents that she owed taxes, she still denied it. Does denying that you owe taxes make you crazy? One would believe that she is just being cheap and stubborn, but during the discussion with the city authorities Emily states See Colonel Satoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson. There is just one problem with that quote. Colonel Satoris is dead and has been for the last ten years.

At an early age Emilys father would chase off guy after guy that she introduced to the family. Emilys father was for the most part the only man in her life. After he passed away some of the towns people and ministers tried to console Emily, but she did not want any consoling. Emily told them that her father was not dead. One would believe she is in denial but not necessarily crazy. She eventually let the doctors and ministers do their job. Losing the only man in your life whether its a husband or father can easily wear on ones psyche. Its at this point that one would believe is when Emily really started to go down-hill. She met a man by the name of Homer Barron. Faulkner describes Homer as a Yankee-a big, dark, ready man, with a big voice eyes lighter than his face.(94) Homer demanded attention and was usually in the center of it. The towns people started to see Homer and Emily spending time together on Sundays. Homer would end up being the main person in Emilys life. She has kin in Alabama, but her father ruined that relationship years before.

One would agree that Homer and Emily are more than just friends. She bought a toilet seat with his initials and also bought him clothes. After a brief stint away from Emily, Homer returns to town. He is seen going into Emilys house. This is the last time anyone would see Homer alive, anyone but Emily and her Negro servant.

Before Homer left and came back Emily bought arsenic. Arsenic is a drug used to kill rodents. One would assume that Emily killed Homer with this drug because he was never seen again. A stench starts to surround Emilys house. Several of the towns people complained about it. Homer was an after-thought and they believe that the stench came from a dead rodent.

After Emilys death and funeral they returned to her house. There is one room that they have to break down the door to get into. Whats behind the door is shocking. The room is set for a bridal and there is Homer lying in a bed, dead, with a grin on his face. One would assume that Homer was going to leave her, and she couldnt handle it so she killed him. She killed him so she would never be alone. She stayed in that house for years, stench and all just to be with him. Emily also had relations with the corps.

All in all, with her family history and the psyche that was created because her father never let her date, this made her insane.
