A real friend is someone who walks in when the rest of the world walks out. This statement is accurately applied in the novel The Pigman and the movie Second Hand Lions. The quote is a prime example of the generation gap.

In the novel The Pigman by Paul Zindel the theme of the generation gap is presented within John and Lorraines lives. Lorraine feels as if her mother and her are living in complete different worlds. Lorraines mother believes appearance is a large aspect in life, while Lorraine believes life is about what you spend your days doing. Lorraines mother uses remarks such as you arent pretty and you should cut your hair, its to kinky on a daily basis.

John finds it easy to relate to anyone besides his parents. John becomes friends with Mr. Pignati and states sometimes its just the way I say one thing that gets her going. John feels his parents are to high strung and that Mr. pignati is much more relaxed and relatable. Both John and Lorraine admire Mr. Pignati and find him easy to talk to. These three best friends become very compatible and have create a strong friendship .

Within the motion picture Second Hand Lions the message of the generation gap is shown between Walter and his mother. Walter and his mother have different morals and standards. He feels that when ever he speaks with his mother she can never understand him. Walters mother is impulsive and irresponsible. Oppose to Walter who is careful and thinks things through.

When Walter meets his uncles, after there odd habits grow on, him he feel that he fits in. He becomes fascinated with there ways and life styles. He enjoys to talk to his uncles and hear about their adventures. He becomes closer with them after spending weeks with them and learning about becoming a man. As the quote says A real friend is someone who walks in when the rest on the world walks out it is just like the film, when Walters mother walked out his uncles walked in to his life.

Friendship is a true gift and should be cherished. The characters discover the true power of friendship, how age is just a number and that you can become friends even the most unexpected people . Within these tales the generation gap and friendship work hand and hand. Bringing people together to find there real friends.
