Compare Ralph and Jacks leadership styles

In the lord of the flies, a range of styles of leadership from democracy to dictatorship and shown by Jack and Ralph. Because this story is an allegory of the war you can notice both Ralph and Jack representing different people/groups in World War 2.

Ralphs uses democratic ways of leading in this book. He allows people to contribute ideas and make collaborative group decisions. In the first chapter of this book when the boys meet Ralph and the choir there are disagreements about who is leader so Ralph says lets have a vote. This shows fairness and agreement. The other boys on the island got to choose who was leader. ill give the conch to the next person to speak this shows that Ralph is happy to hear other opinions and uses a good way to listen to people. The conch is used throughout the book to represent order and authority. The boys on the island know to listen to whoever is holding the conch and respect it. Ralph is fair when it comes to making decisions; he does not choose himself and uses a voting system like democratic leaders.

Jacks way of leading in lord of the flies is very different to Ralphs. Jack is more of a dictator, a violent, forcing leader, giving no one else freedom of speech. When he first leads the choir to the other boys he is described as the boy who controlled them this shows he is an obvious and strong leader. It makes him sound intimidating and aggressive. Jack uses lots of imperatives when speaking to the other boys for example choir. Stand still. This shows he is very demanding and intimidating. One of his first words to the boys are I ought to be chief this shows he thinks he is the best and an unfair way of choosing, this is a bad first impression to make to the rest of the boys. Throughout the book Jack is only interested in hunting. It is the only thing he wants to do, this shows he doesnt want to work with Ralphs Democratic ways and does a she pleases, however, he begins to hold the conch when wanting to speak and respecting and contributing ideas, all the same, we need an army. This shows he is thinking about the boys safety and is trying to help.

Overall, if I was a leader I would choose to use democratic ideas. I think voting for a leader is the fairest way. People should be entitled to the right to contribute their opinions and ideas. These should all be taken into account when making decisions which affect a group of people. Everyone should have a freedom of speech and a chance to choose their leader.
