Imagine youre stuck in a terrible mental state where everything makes you sad and you feel like you will never feel as happy as you once did. That is what depression feels like. The Catcher in the Rye is a novel about the life of Holden Caulfield and the depressing events he goes through during a three day period of his life. In The Catcher in the Rye Holden Caulfield plays a young boy that is clearly extremely depressed and goes through many suicidal experiences. Holden is depressed and because of this he is turned away from any friends or family he has and is kicked out of his boarding school for failing four out of his five classes. Holden and his story are very inspiring and upsetting at the same time and explains to everyone what life is like as a depressed teenager.

Holden is clearly very depressed and shows it many different times throughout his novel. One example of where Holden feels very depressed is on page 52 when he says, almost every time somebody gives me a present it ends up making me sad (52). This quote clearly shows that Holden is very depressed and even happy things in life like receiving a present make him sad. Any one that gets sad and feels depressed after getting a gift from someone must be having some real problems and is without a doubt very depressed. This is one of many examples where Holden feels very depressed and shares his feelings about how often he is sad.

Holden is a very depressed teenager and has many problems in his life. Another example of his depression is when he talks about the way he feels most of the time and says, Boy I felt so miserable I felt so depressed you cant imagine (98). This quote is a clear example of Holdens depressing feelings and shows that Holden must have some problems and is always miserable and depressed. According to researchers of depression, depressed teens will often complain about feeling miserable and lousy and are often looking for someone to share their feelings with. This proves that Holden is very depressed and should be talking to some kind of doctor about his problems and depressions.

Holden Caulfield is clearly a very depressed and upset young teenage and because of this he turns to drug and alcohol abuse to solve his problems. One example of Holdens drug abuse is when he tells about his experience with smoking cigarettes and how, After old Sunny was gone I sat in the chair for a while a smoked a couple cigarettes (98). Holden clearly has some drug related problems and is turning toward his drug and alcohol addiction to help with his depression. Studies have shown that depressed teenagers will very often turn toward drugs and alcohol to help them relax and get their minds off of their problems and depression. These studies prove even further that Holden must be deeply depressed and is turning toward drugs to help him cope with his issues.

It is obvious that Holden has some clear drug related problems but he also has some problems with an alcohol addiction. Holden is constantly talking about drinking and going to bars and is without a doubt addicted to both drugs and alcohol. One example of Holdens alcohol abuse is when he talks about going to a chapel and drinking by himself in the middle of the night. I bought a pint of scotch and drank it in the chapel one Saturday night where nobody would see (102). Holden is very depressed and deals with his feelings by turning to alcohol and getting drunk by himself very often. Like the experts say, depressed teens will turn toward drugs and alcohol to deal with their problems. I think this clearly shows that Holden is a sad teenager that has problems dealing with his emotions.

Depression is a serious disease that has many side effects that include suicide. Depression can cause its victim to feel extremely useless and sad, so terrible that it pushes them to commit suicide. Depression can cause someone to feel so terrible that they have no other choice but to escape their problems by killing themselves. Holden has clearly been showed as a very depressed teenager and because of his depression he has suicidal thoughts and gets very close to killing himself several times in this novel. Holden talks about suicide when he says things like, what I really felt like though was committing suicide, I felt like jumping out the window (104). Holden has many suicidal thoughts during his story and comes very close to killing himself several times in this book. Depression is without a doubt a very serious and dangerous disease that can have terrible effects on young teenagers.

Depression has many side effects and along with suicidal thoughts it can make someone feel extremely lousy and lazy. Depression effects Holden in many ways including giving him loss of interest in everything he does and makes him feel very lazy and lousy.
