The two main characters in the book Bud, Not Buddy are Bud Caldwell and Herman E. Calloway.

Bud Caldwell is a ten year old African American boy. He is a brave person because he travels a very far distance by himself when most people, especially African Americans, werent supposed to travel at night. He wasnt afraid to be on the run. He is a very cautious person because he sleeps with a pocket knife to protect himself. He is a very sensitive boy. He carries everything his mom gave him in a suitcase and does not leave it unguarded. He is strong willed because he doesnt quit. He would not give up trying to find Herman E. Calloway, the person who he thought was his father. When Herman and the whole band told him that Herman was not his father, he kept on believing Herman was until he found out the truth.

Herman E. Calloway is an old person and a leader of a band. His band is well known all around the country. He is a mean and uncaring person. He yelled at Bud for saying that he was Buds father. When Bud said he lived with a family that adopted him and he ran away from them, Herman just said we are sending you back to where you came from.

The book takes place in 1936, in Flint, Michigan. Buds mother passed away in her sleep. Bud was brought to an orphanage, where he got adopted by the Amoses. The only thing that he has is a suitcase with him wherever he goes. It has a picture of his mom a blanket, flyers of a band and leader and special rocks. The Amos family locked him in a shed outside their home and Bud escapes. He decides to look for the person he thought is his dad, the person from the flyer, Herman E. Calloway, a band leader. He travels all over and finally finds the band. He is convinced that Herman is his father but Herman denies it. Finally they both realize that Bud is Hermans grandson because his mother is Hermans daughter.

The theme of the book is family. Bud cares so much for his family. He carries a picture of his mom everywhere he goes. He travels a very far distance just so he can find his father. Even after Herman yells at Bud to go away, he stays and tries to get Herman to admit that he is his father. When Herman finds out that Buds mom who died was his daughter he burst out in tears because he cares so much for his own daughter and didnt know she had died.
