Winston and Parson are very different, in so many ways, but they also have a few similarities. In 1894, the people are all in fear of walking wrong, talking wrong, thinking wrong, anything that would be found to have a reason to destroy them.

One difference between Winston and Parson was Winston was a loner after his wife had left him, while Parson had a wife and two kids. Parsons wife had left him, because there was no reason to stay, because every time they tried they couldnt have children. Parson on the other hand had a wife that was very old, and two children who were determined to help Big Brother find traitors. His daughter was successful when she followed a man and turned him in saying the shoes gave him away. Another difference between them is that Parson is loyal to Big Brother, while Winston wants to rebel against Big Brother, and gets society changed. To the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free, when men are different from one another and do not live alone to a time when truth exists and what is done cannot be undone: From the age of uniformity from the age of solitude, from the age of Big Brother, from the age of doublethinking Greetings! This is one of the quotes that stood out to me the most. I think it sums up Winstons plans for a change in society. Also, Im not sure if they get paid different, or what they find valuable is different, but Parson lugged out a huge and filthy pipe which was already half full of charred tobacco. With the tobacco ration at a hundred grams a week it was seldom possible to fill a pipe up to the top while, Winston could only get Victory Cigarette which he held carefully horizontal. They also are different, because Winston knows he will die because he is too smart of a thinker, but Parson on the other hand is employed in some subordinate post for which intelligence was not required which means he is not a threat to Big Brother. This is weird, because Winston says that Mrs. Parson will die, when here children turn her in, but Parson wont. A similarity that the two had was they were both worked in the ministry of truth. This is very ironic considering the ministry of truth dealt with making lies to make Big Brother look right and God like. I have a feeling that Parsons children will turn him in some time after they turn their mother in, and Winston will just be betrayed by someone he trusts. So both of them may be betrayed by people that they have put their trust in, and lose their lives, but since Winston is the main character he may escape and find a place that is better then Oceania.

Winston is similar yet more different then Mr. Parson. Parson seems to feel that there is nothing wrong and he is high enough in society that he doesnt have to worry about the change in society, not paying much attention or thinking that his children may be him and his wifes downfall. Winston on the other hand is on his toes, and doesnt like how the society is being run, and wants to change how things are run, but has trouble trusting anyone with his thoughts afraid that they will turn him in. This may be his downfall, because he wants so bad to change society that he will tell the first person he thinks is on his side.
