Othello is one of the four great tragedies of Shakespeare .
Othello is the theme of many works, including: the theme of love and jealousy, breach of trust and rely on the theme, the theme of mixed marriages, and so on. On the comments of Othello , it was known that England praised this drama highly as early as in the last half of the 17th century, "From the poetry and gut, especially from the story, it is a very exellent drama. Major characters are depicted well. And the alluting scene eminently shows the wicked Iagos depravity. For the protagonist Othello ,usually there are two points of view: he is a strong heroic with open- mind and noble soul. His beloved wife is killed by himself because of his credulity and the archness of cunning Iago. The other is, Othello is not noble but a man with strong self-consciousness and defective personality. It is his responsiboility that he believes Iago promptly.
While in my view, there is a remarkable trait in the drama of Shakespeare, which is the personalization of characters. Each character that Shakeapeare creates has his/her own distinctive personality. Certainly, main characters in Othello are described distinctively, such as meek Desdemoma, relentless Iago, cynical Emilia, honest Cassio, and foolish Ladovico. However, the auther spreads out the story with Othello. And Othello changes his mind, which determines the result of the tale. Then I briefly analyse the temmperament of Othello.
Othello, a Moor, is a general and commander of the Venetian armed forces, and later governor of Cyprus. He secretly weds Desdemona and provokes Iago's enmity by promoting Cassio. He later relieves Cassio of his rank when he believes that the lieutenant started a drunken brawl. Othello gradually succumbs to Iago's plot, and, believing that Desdemona is unfaithful, smothers her. When he realizes she was innocent of Iago's accusations, he commits suicide
The Moor, as many Venetians call him, is of strong character. He is very proud and in control of every move throughout the play. The control is not only of power but of the sense of his being who he is, a great warrior. In Act I, Othello has a scuffle with Brabantio, who has come to kill him, but before anything could happen Othello said, "Hold your hands, both of you of my inclining and the rest. Were it my cue to fight, I should have known it without a prompter" (I, ii, lines 80-3). The power shown here is quite astounding. To be sure, Othello is a bravery warriar. Due to conducting with the proper methed in the cruel war against the Turks, he is promoted to the Genaral of the Venice amy. Moreover, he get respected and reliant in the country. Here we can come to the conclusion that his talent in military affairs is outstanding and brilliant. What is more, he is an upright person, frank and openhearted, which turns out to be easy for others to exploit. The officer, Michael Cassio, is a young man , smart , highly educated but inexperienced in battle, with the flirtatiousmanner with women. To some extent, Othello is jealous of Michael Cassio. He promotes Cassio as lieutenant, which makes the elder officer, Iago, disatified. To dispose of Michael Cassio, Desdemona, as well as the Moors, sinister Iago makes a vengeance by a terrible conspiracy.
Cassio is implicated in a drunken brawl on Cyprus by Iago and loses his place as lieutenant. Then Iago makes Desdemona ask for a favour for Michiael Cassio to her husband. ButOthello is in his anger, and not willing to consent to the request of his wife. Additionally, he feels more averse with Michael Cassio. In the meantime, Othello is firmly convinced that Iago is a firm-minded person, full with kindheartedness and honest, which is exactly the weakness of Othello that he can not judge everything rationally while in anger. Besides, Othello can not criticize himself after commiting a mistake, and he is not thoroughly familiar with all the subordinates under his leadership. All these lead to Othello exploited absolutely by the careerist.
Once, Desdemona begs for leniency for Michael Cassio for a second time. Othello does not notice that Desdemona leaves the handkerchief given by Othello on the ground. When told the news from Iago that Desdemona gives the handkerchief to Michael Cassio, Othello utterly believes.
As a matter of fact, we can be aware of two weak points of Othello in this incident.
In the first place, Othello is not fully concerned with trivial things in life. Consequently, he does not pay attention to the handkerchief left by his wife, which helps Iago carry on his conspiracy. In some ways, we can consider Othello to be stubborn adherence to outworm rules and ideas.
In addition, Othello can not think deeply about the problems among people. The reason why he chooses a foreigner as the lieutenant is that Othello thinks it is convenient to communicate. However, Othello ignores that all he has done make Iago, the native, resent. Othello should have known that Iago would have his revenge on people relevant. But Othello does not notice by the iota.
The nature of Othello's character is of a dark man. A dark man, not only because he is black, but also because his whole person is very mysterious. He is mysterious in that he believes there is magic brewing everywhere. With this dark side he is also very outgoing, and not very bright. He isn't observant and the schemes of Iago work well on him. Though he doesn't reflect too much on his past, except occasional ventures of wars fought, he does let his emotions run his life.
To be sure, we can not completely consider othello to be without a single redeeming feature.
Othello has certain traits which make him seem naive and unsophisticated compared to many other people. This is why Iago, to get his just rewards uses him as a scapegoat. Iago told Roderigo, " O,sir, content you. I follow him [Othello] to serve my turn upon him "(I, i lines 38-9). Iago is saying, he only follows Othello to a point, and upon reaching it he will not follow him any longer. Iago has opened my eyes to see the real meaning of deceit. No matter what, Iago will try to take advantage of Othello any time and he will be easily lead to believe the lies of Iago.
He is brave and skillful in battle, and makes unusual contributions repeatedly. Furthermore, he is a man of decency, and extremely detests some repulsive things. As a result, he believes the lie of Iago without the least hesitation. Eventurally he can not free himself and gets bogged down in the difficult position. In addition, it is praiseworthy that he has the courage to admit his mistakes after he mistakes. What is more, he obviously longs for the happy and glorious love.
Above all dicussed above,, the author, Shakespeare, idealises the character, Othello. This expecially epitomizes that he eagerly looks forward to the happy and glorious love., which I just mentioned above. In the beginning, Othello believes that he is loved by Desdemona, his soul has already tasted the most happiest thing in life, While losong his lover, he thinks tha he has lost the destination of his life voyage. His love expresses his persistence to his idearl of life. Moreover, Othello strives so long for love, and gets married with Desdemona. However, it is a pity that the love of Othello and Desdemona is broken down by Iagos slanderous talk. Perhaps, errows always results in the occurrence of very sad events. Beside jealous, Othello regareds himself as infallible, opinionated, and judge right and wrong by his conjecture. Additionally, the negnative endurance of Desdemana makes Othello even more doubtfull, Which causes the tragedy. Whether or no, Othellos character is praiseworthy for his excellent conduct.
In the end, Othello is worth reading. All the character in the drama are portrayed exquisitely. Hence, the drama, Othello desreves to be called one of the four great tragedies of Shakespeare . This why my belief of Othello is one of a man whose character is brought to light of a horrible situation by a deceitful devil named Iago. The benevolent see benevolence and the wise see wisedom.
