In the poem Harlem (1951) by Langston Hughes, its a very thoughtful essay that had me wondering and asking myself questions that was hard to find answers too. Especially on the questions What happens to a dream deferred?, Does it stink like a raisin in the sun?, Or does it explode?. We all have had dreams before and know that they can not be predicted no matter how accurate you think are. Dreams are like diseases you never know when it will occur. The purpose of dreams, experiences as a dreamer and why we dream are some of the things I was trying to find answers to when I read the poem.

Dreams are so compelling, and they often seem so weird and strange -- surely they must have a "purpose"; that is, an "adaptive role" in the maintenance of our bodily or psychological health. Furthermore, all the famous theorists who talk about dreams claim that dreams do have one or another purpose (although the famous theorists disagree on just what those functions are), but the best current evidence suggests otherwise. Dreams probably have no purpose! dreamserch.net by G. William Domhoff. But do dream have meanings, it is hard to predict or interpret some dreams, because dreams have their uses. It might be use to help someone, yourself or any current thing happening. You might have a dream about a person you know, you will not know why till the dream is being experience in awaking life.

I always thought dreams are cousins of day dreaming. My dreams are more like a raisin in the sun. The dreams I have are hard to figure out. The dreams I have are not fantasy, their everyday real life situation that I wake up asking WHY. I had a dream about a couple friends of mine. We were at the park playing basketball. Then other people came to join as, so we started playing on teams. It didnt take long for an argument to break out between a friend of mine and another person. The argument escalated into a fight, we all started fighting, then shoots rang out. I turned around and saw a guy holding his jaw. Blood was gushing, and then everybody started running including me. After that then I wake up. I have been having identical to this dream and it all happens to places I like spending my time at and each time someone gets shot. Ive been having these kinds of dreams for about four years now. Each time I live the house I wonder if today might be the day.

There many dream theories no one can even agree on one. Sigmund Freud, said that the function of dreams was to preserve sleep, dream.net, the purpose of dreams By G. Willam Domhoff. Carl Jung, an early follower of Freud who broke away to develop a very different theory, claimed that the function of dreams is to compensate for those parts of the psyche (total personality) that are underdeveloped in waking life. And other dream theorists say that dreams have a problem-solving function, dream.net, the purpose of dreams By G. Willam Domhoff. I cant even support any theories because from my own experiences of dreaming. In Freuds theory there is not enough to convince me that the function of dreams was to preserve sleep. Then if we wake up from sleep we still going to feel tired, because we sleep to rest our body and preserve energy. The other theory by Carl Jung is a little complicated for me. What underdeveloped personality is he talking a about. All our personality is part of who we are. How do we develop our personality in sleep? I think dreams are something that our mind does to entertain itself when we sleep.

The poem leaves me with a lot of questions with all the similes. We all can relate because each one of the question applies to the many of the dreams weve had. Based on the poem, dreams leave us with on unfilled answers.
