In the novel Fahrenheit 451, the protagonist,Guy Montag. Experiences a new set of emotion when he brings to question his happiness as well as his society. Not only does he bring himself to believe how, but as to why is he unhappy.
To begin with, There are various reasons as to why Montag is quite unhappy with his life. He lives in a society by which all rules are followed by the citizens in the area such as being a pedestrian, like reading, is against the law. Society itself and as a whole contributes to his unhappiness. The way society is portrayed in the novel makes it seem like everybody is happy with how things are ran. Although everybody lives a content life. There is one who isnt after a conversation with his neighbor, Clarisse McClellan, a young women who speaks to Montag and somehow manages him to re-evaluate his life when she asks him whether or not he is happy with his life.
Second, Montags unhappiness can also be answered by his wife: Mildred. When he comes home to find her with her sleeping pills, a squad of jet bombers come and try to rescue her by taking out the poisoned blood and replace it with new blood. Their disregard for Mildred forces Montag to question the state of society which leads to his unhappiness. Having Mildred by his side, she doesnt seem to bother to talk to him after the accident occurred, with Mildred not knowing her actions that night. She watches TV on the wall acting like nothing had happened. Another reason as to why he is unhappy.
Thirdly, Being a firefighter in that time doesnt seem right when Montags job is to burn books rather then to putting the fires away. Throughout the novel, he begins to ask himself the real purpose of being one. When he and a group of firemen go and burn books at a womans house. He curiously takes one of the books and hides it in his coat. before they burn all the books. The lady refuses to leave and decides to burn herself as well. Hence, commits suicide. The firemen are strangely quiet as they ride back to the station afterward. In a way, this shows the unhappiness of not only Montag but the firemen as well seeing as they show no remorse for the lady who had killed herself. Evidently, Montag realizes their actions and really starts to question himself Why?
In conclusion, the unhappiness that is brought upon Guy Montag is without a doubt contributed by not only his wife Mildred, who doesnt seem to care much for him. His job that doesnt put away the fire, but rather set it off. As well as society. Who has made Montag think like everybody else in they city. Until he met Clarisse and noticed how her personality made him wonder. Clarisse opens Montag's eyes to the beauties of the natural world, and she recognizes that he is not like everyone else and has the potential to be a thinking individual like her. His unhappiness has brought himself to read the books that he has been hiding to see if they can give him an answer to his troubled dilemma.
