Men, women, children and adults all act different or have their own personalities. The women and men are defined by their gender such as the adults and children are respectively defined on how they act. Like how children act like children such as rebellious and adults act or they are grown and carry out their responsibilities the characters in Fences are defined by their larger categories.

In the play Fences men and woman are defined differently. For example the women in this play are the housekeepers. They stay home, make dinner take care of the kids and cook dinner [excluding Lyons girlfriend who is never seen in the play]. Women arent considered as equal in this play as it states:

Rose: What you all out here getting into?

Troy: What you worried about what we getting into for? This is men talk, woman.

They listen to the men of the house as their masters and usually are easy to fool. For example Rose was fooled by Troy for some time about every Saturday when he would say that he would be going to tailors to watch the baseball game, but really he was having an affair. Rose would have never known this if Troy hadnt told her.

Men are defined differently from the woman in this play. Men, such as troy play a big role in taking care of family. They bring home the money and provide for the families, but men act differently towards their wives. Troy would treat Rose as his house slave, ordering her around as if shes his pet:

Troy: well go back in the house and let me and bono finish what we was talking about. This is men talk. I got some talk for you later you know what kind of talk I mean. You go on and get powdered up.

Rose: Troy Maxson, dont you start now.

The passage from the story shows that he exploits her however he pleases and uses her whenever he wants to.

The kids in this play such, as Cory is an average teenager. He is rebellious towards his father when Troy tells him to settle down and learn a trade of some sort. And of course you cant tell a 17 year old to settle down and do something he doesnt want to do, he [Cory] wants to play football, and at one point he is fed up with troy and doesnt take it anymore:

Cory: You aint never gave me nothing! You aint never done nothing but hold me back. Afraid I was gonna be better than you. All you ever did was try and make me scared of you. I used to tremble every time you called my name. Every time I heard your footsteps in the house. Wondering all the time . . . whats papa gonna say if I do this? . . . Whats he gonna say if I do that? . . . Whats papa gonna say if I turn on the radio? And mama, too . . . she tries . . . but shes scared of you. [pgs.86-87]

Raynell on the the other hand shes excluded from this because she doesnt really interact with Troy as much and is a whole lot younger than Cory, so shes not a teenager shes about 7 years old and is signified as the new sign of hope.

The adults in the play are usually the regular type of an adult you would get. They go to work, provide for the family and take care of theyre responsibilities such as theyre kids, cleaning, and chores etc. Troy is the main caregiver around the house. He makes sure there is food in the fridge and a pot to piss in:

Troy: Like you? I go out of here every morning . . . bust my butt . . . putting up with them crackers every day . . . cause I like you? You about the biggest fool I ever saw.

(pause.)

Its my job. Its my responsibility! You understand that? A man got to take care of his family.

This quote shows that adults in this play are given a responsibility that they are supposed to take on and carry it out.
