Great Expectations
Charles Dickens writes a classic love story in the novel Great Expectations. In the novel Pip starts out as a young boy that is oblivious to many things that go on in the world around him. His misconceptions about the world he is living in follow him throughout his life and turn out to be his biggest downfall. As he grows up and changes, his expectations takes him on a journey that changes his life. However, many of these misconceptions are covered up because of love.
The story starts and Pip is just a young boy happy with his life. The life that he lives is soon to take a wild turn. First he meets the convict in the marshes, then he is summoned to Miss Havishams house, and finally he meets his love the beautiful Estella. These changes sends his life into a whirlwind. These things change the young Pip from an ignorant boy into a proper gentleman. The truth of Pips fate will change him in many ways.
After Pip met Estella he was drawn to her beauty and elegance. Estella was different from any person Pip had ever met. Pip wished her to be his but that was to only be a dream for him. With his status in life he knew that he would never be able to be with Estella. Knowing that he would have to raise his status in life Pip starts to better himself as a person. He would have done anything to be with Estella so he started to become a gentlemen instead of just a boy. He would get this opportunity to change his place in life and accepts it willing. However he would have to make this known Miss Havisham and Estella.
Pip goes onto a new life that will definitely better him. He hopes that one day he will be able to come back and claim Estella as his one day. Meanwhile, Estella is sent to him to be watched over. Pip must endure many things while living with Estella. There are many suitors that come to see her, and he must wait for his time to claim her. Later on Pip learns that fate would give another man his bride and he was not meant to be with her. This gives Pip a whole knew meaning for his life now that he realizes his dream would be only that.
Pip is one of the many people that seek to change themselves one way or another to impress another individual. Almost everyone has done this at least one time. However love is something that people should not have to change for. Every person should be loved for themselves and Pip did not realize this early in his life. Pip was not true to himself or Estella because he changed himself to try to be with her. The relationships that we build rely on mainly trust and Pip started their relationship shaky terms.
Love can do crazy things to people and Pip showed this throughout the novel. He was hurt because he had to sit and watch as other people came to take out the person that he was so madly in love with. Finally these emotions that Pip had been holding in came out. When he heard about Estellas husband to be, Pip decided to walk all the way home from the country. He was affected by all the things he had to endure while living with Estella. Pips expectations in life get the best of him here and leave him in a cloud of confusion.
After learning about the marriage Pip starts to regret some of the things that he did because of the high expectations he had. Meeting Estella and Miss Havisham could have been the worst thing that ever happened for Pip. He never would have had to endure all the pain and suffering he went through watching his love fade away from him. It was out of his control but it was something that brought great pain to his life. It is understandable that this happened to Pip because of the things that love can do to a person. His expectations were just to high and it was something that he never would have accomplished. In Pips case he learned that when we love we must be ready to lose it all sometime because love can grow and fade in the blink of an eye.
