Hedda Gabler, a play by Henrik Ibsen paints the true colors of the main character, Hedda Tesman. A newlywed, and aging socialite, Hedda intersects with long-ago lovers and passed enemies. Throughout the play, a canvas of Heddas personality surfaces, and admirable and appalling characteristics of her emerge.

During many portions of the play, Hedda sheds her good-girl mask, and her true colors leak through. One instance is when Julie Tesman comes to visit her nephew after their year long honeymoon, and takes off her hat. As Hedda comes into the room, she purposefully insults Miss Julie Tesmans hat, saying, Were never going to manage with this maidSee there! Shes left her old hat lying out on a chair! (230) It is later revealed in the play that Hedda said this on purpose. Another of her characteristics, her madness, is revealed when Hedda, jealous of Thea and Eilerts relationship, rips their wonderful manuscript to shreds. Heddas familiarity with a pistol, and ease to break out in shooting practice at close friends, exposes her unsteady conscience.

Hedda Tesman is a unique character with a trait that is not abundant in many womens shelf of characteristics. That attribute is confidence. Heddas confidence isnt always a good thing, though. Most of the time, Hedda becomes cocky because she has the power to manipulate people to do what she wants the` `m to. However, her confidence wins over many people, and sways people from thinking shes full of herself, to being someone they want to be around. Heddas confidence has a tendency to radiate from her, and make other people feel good about them. Her unique quality can be seen as a disability or a blessing, but either way, it makes Hedda original.

Heddas character is completely believable. There are many people in this world with features exactly like Heddas; deeply rooted in themselves, Heddas characteristics exist in the real world just as easily as they do in play form. Her conceited, manipulative, crazy, mean ways are consistent throughout the play, and nothing changes about her, only more is showcased.

The picture painted in Hedda Gabler, by Henrik Ibsen is not always a pretty one, but it puts a spotlight on the many types of people that can possibly exist. Traits that are voluminous in todays societybeing conceited, manipulative, crazy, mean, traitorous, and deviousare also shown in Hedda Gabler.
