You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it. Yann Martel. This quotation means that when life comes good or bad you have to except it in order to make the best of it. For example if I am having a miserable day then its either I go with the flow or I ruin my day even more. If I was to go with the flow then my day would turn out much better than if I wasnt to go with the flow and try to go against nature. I agree with this quote because it shows that life isnt only good or bad but its both and we, as humans, should know how to make the best of it. This quote can relate to John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men and Simone Elkeles Leaving paradise.

The quote above can relate to the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Throughout the book the main characters, George and Lennie, face lots of hardships. In order to reach their purpose and the American Dream both characters must take life the way it comes at [them] and make the best of it. Most of the characters inOf Mice and Menadmit, at one point or another, to have a different life. Before her death, Curleys wife confessed her desire to be a movie star. Crooks, bitter as he is, told himself a pleasant fantasy of hoeing a patch of garden on Lennies farm one day, and Candy attached himself on, desperately, to Georges vision of owning a couple of acres. Before the story begins, the characters were robbed of their wishes. Curleys wife wanted to be a movie star and instead is in an unfulfilling marriage with Curley. Crooks go against George and Lennies idea of the American Dream but cant help himself but to ask if he can tag along due to his isolation of everyone around him. And Candy wants to own acres of farmland with George but his devotion to his dream is so strong that even after they discover the homicide of Curleys wife they still planned on getting the acres of land. George and Lennie dream of owning a farm that would allow them to get away and be protected from the world where they are misjudged but George shortly realizes that in order to do so he cannot be the caretaker of Lennie anymore. Each of these characters; with the exception of Curleys wife and Lennie, struggle in their life because they think that sooner or later they will get to the comprehension of even achieving their dreams.

Johns usage of showing strengths and weaknesses also relate to the quote. In the beginning Of Mice and Men the physical strength of Lennies is out of control. If John wouldnt have ever used this as the opening then the book wouldnt have foreshadowed the death of Curleys wife. Physical strength is, like money, its valuable to the men but can sometimes create chaos. Lennies physical strength made others feel intimated by him and with that said he made the best of his life like that.

Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles is another book that can relate to this quotation. This book is nothing like Of Mice and Men; in fact I believe this book to relate to the quote better than Of Mice and Men. Caleb Becker, a main character, recently got out of jail. He was put in there because he hit the other main character, Maggie Armstrong. While Caleb rioted in prison, Maggie spent months in surgery fixing her leg. But towards the middle of the book Caleb and Maggie fall in love. Even though Caleb supposedly hit Maggie with his car she and him [Took] life the way it [came] at [them] and [made] the best of it. They both worked with each other. Caleb worked for his community service and Maggie worked to receive money. Apparently Caleb and Maggies families didnt want them together but who could blame them, if Caleb never hit her it would have been a difference story. Caleb and Maggie didnt care what they said though and went on to loving each other and secretly meeting up. They enjoyed life together, side by side. Simone used the theme of love and tragedy to convince her audience that even though life is hard sometimes you just have to take the good with the bad and make the best of it. This refers to the quote as well. Its ironic how she almost died and he almost died too but when placed together, side by side, they can overcome everything.

[We] must take life the way it comes at [us] and make the best of it. Yann Martel. Life isnt always easy. We all know that but sometimes we have to take the good with the bad and hope for the best. Nothing never really goes the way we actually planned but that gives us more of a reason to try even harder at doing what we need and want to do. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles relate to this quotation. Both authors convey in their books of tragic that life is hard but thats why we need to get it our best.
