In this drama, an uncommon woman is classified in many different ways. An uncommon woman can be classified as a woman who stays under wraps and keeps her business to herself, or a woman who goes against the foundations of the village. In this story, Bernarda is an evil woman who treats everyone with such disrespect and vileness that eventually karma comes into play, and in the end, her life takes a turn for the worse. This story has about eight uncommon women but if I had to choose one, it would be Adela. Adela is the youngest daughter of Bernarda but also the one that is most like her mother.
Adela shows her jealousy very early in the play. She starts yelling and crying I will not get used to it! I cannot be locked up. I do not want my skin to look like yours. Tomorrow Im going to put on my green dress and go walking in the streets. (p816) She is saying that she cannot bear staying in the confined house anymore and she wants to explore what is outside. Adela tries not to act like her mother then she always goes back to acting like her mother. The way she is as her mother is towards her older sister, Martirio. Martirio is concerned about her younger sister but Adela makes it seem as if her sister is a burden.
Poncia tries to warn Adela that it is not wrong for Adela to like Pepe el Romano, but it is wrong to go after her sisters man. It is against Gods law. Poncia gives Adela some hope also because Poncia says Besides, who says you cant marry him? Your sister Angustias is sickly and she will die with her first child. Then Pepe will marry the youngest and most beautiful, and that is you. (p818) Adela shows her jealousy by exaggerating up her mother. When Martirio played the joke on Angustias by stealing the picture Adela is right there to say that Martirio does not like to play jokes. She tries her hardest to get Martirio in trouble so she can have Pepe all to herself.
In the end of Act 2, there is a heated dialogue between Martirio and Adela. This scene shows that the two women like Pepe. It also shows that Martirio would give up liking him if no one got him. Adela showed that she would stop at nothing to get Pepe. Poncia says something that sums up all the problems in the household. She says, Theyre women without men that is all. In addition, in such matters even blood is forgotten. (p826) This is when Adela confronts Martirio about her love for Pepe. Adela tries to hug her and say she is not the one to blame, but Martirio pushes her and says she sees Adela, not as her sister, but as just another woman vying for Pepes heart.
In the end of the play, Adela says she will let Angustias marry Pepe, but she will be Pepes mistress and live in a house where he can come see her anytime. She shows that she would stop at nothing to have this man. As long as she has a piece of him, she will destroy her family in the process. She ends up dying at the hands of her mother. She defied her mother by breaking the tyrants cane and in return, her mother accidentally shot her. The shot was meant for Pepe but in return hit her. Adela was the most uncommon woman because she went against the morals of being a true sister. She disrespected the definition of family and in return paid for that with her life. Her mother buried her virgin but she died a non-virgin.
