Susan Glaspells play Trifles is a murder mystery drama that stresses the importance of evidence to solve a crime. Two professionals, sheriff Henry Peters and George Henderson, a county attorney, are searching for obvious, evident, incriminating evidence that they overlook trifles. However, wives of Mr. Wrights close friends, pick up on the small clues of the mystery. In the end, these two women solve the murder, but do not tell anyone.

Two of the biggest pieces of evidences are Mrs. Wrights bird and her past. She wanted a family, which presented a problem since Mr. Wright didnt want children or even a pet. Over the past several years, he wouldnt even let her leave the farm. Her only true passion, singing, was stripped away from her when her husband told her she wasnt allowed to sing in the choir anymore. Mrs. Wright had a lonely and pathetic life. She felt insignificant and secluded from the rest of the town. Mrs. Wright had bought a pretty singing bird to cure her loneliness and love for music. There was a lot of meaning behind this bird. In Mrs. Wrights lonely life she had a bright yellow beautiful bird that could do something she could never do again sing. With a lack of family, pets and love, she looked to the bird to cure her loneliness by caring for it. Even the way the bird was killed resembles the way her husband was killed. I feel that by killing his wives bird he not only took the birds life, he took the only part of life his wife had left.

Mrs. Wright had many motives as to the murder of her husband. However, all of her motives could be stemmed from her suppressed anger and frustration with her selfish husband. She was alienated from her friends and the one thing that brought her joy, music. The way she responded to Mr. Hale in a blank state of mind when he asked her what happened that night says a lot her marriage to and murder of Mr. Wright. She seemed numb, emotionless, and almost lifeless. I believe the final straw came when Mrs. Wright noticed her dead bird and decided to return the favor to her husband. Mr. Wright took the only thing his wife cared about, her bird, so Mrs. Wright took the only thing he cared about, himself. Mrs. Wright life of neglect, loneliness and frustration represent a clear motive to murder Mr. Wright.

When she killed her husband, she hung hem from his neck. It was a symbolic revenge, as her husband had killed her bird by trauma to the neck. By carrying though with it, avenged her dead bird and gave herself peace of mind.
