The Good Earth

The Good Earth is a book by Pearl S. Buck that was published in 1931. The Good Earth is a story that explains about the struggles that a farmer and his family had to live. Wang Lung a young farmer, Lung is a hard worker man and at the same time ambitious. O-lan a poor girl that was slave in the old mistress house, she was a not the good looking. O-lan had a square, honest face, a short, broad nose with large black nostrils, and her mouth was wide as a gash in her face. Her eyes were small and of a dull black in color, she was a not the good looking girl (Buck 20). The story takes place in the early- twentieth-century China. The conflict in the novel is that desire of power of the land that Lung has.

The character of the novel The Good Earth has some good moments, and they have some bad moments. A good moment of the novel of the novel is when Lung and O-lan gat married.

An emotion that I have by reading the story is that I feel hopeless for one of the characters. O-lan is the character that I feel hopeless. I feel the emotion hopeless for O-lan because when she get married with Lung everything should be better in her life. I feel hopeless first when she had to give birth alone to her first child. After giving birth to her baby, O-lan still had to go work in the fields. When O-lan was giving birth to her first child Buck claims she had stopped in her labor to prepare them food (37). This brings me the feel of hopeless because there is to seem to be no possibility of a better future for O-lan.

After, o-lan had to give birth to her first child I continue having the feeling of hopeless for O-lan. In this occasion I had the feeling of hopeless because she had to kill her fourth child when she was having labor. After everything in her life was going well, in a second their lives change dramatically. She had to kill her fourth baby because of the situation that her family was. The family of Lung was starving, there were no signs of food. The people of the village was leaving to the south to go look for food. Lung decides to go to the south, but he was going to wait until O-lan gives birth. Buck states what agony of starvation this woman had endured, with the starved creature gnawing at her from within, desperate for its own life! (87). The feeling of hopeless comes to me again. There were just not sign for a better situation for O-lan.

Finally, I feel hopeless because Wang Lung takes another woman to their house. When everything was looking better for O-lan again everything was going wrong. Even that they were having a rich life at this moment, emotionally O-lan was not happy and everything was going wrong for here. Lotus was the name of the lady that lung took to their house to give him pleasure. Lotus was a pretty woman, she was young. Lotus was separate from the house and she will never go out from her room. Buck states Come out, my Lotus Flower, here is your house and here is your lord (211). Hopeless is the reaction that I have after reading the novel The good Earth. After, O-land helps Wang Lung get rich and she was there in the bad moment of Wang Lung life.

Imagine struggle through your whole life, if there was no sign of a better life for you. In the novel The Good Earth there were a lot of struggles for the character O-lan
