Humans beings go through a lot of troubles and obstacles every day of there life, some people go through more troubles than other people , the only thing that gives people a boost is the thought of coming home and spending time with there families. Sometimes people are to absorbed into there own world and they start to neglect the people they love and when people get neglected they start to change. In The Rocking Horse Winner and The Jewels it is shown how neglect can effect not only the one being neglected but the one who is doing the neglecting. In both stories the source of negligence was spousal dispute and because of this it lead to them being oblivious to their loved ones activities which eventually lead to their deaths.

In both stories neglection begins their because of the spouses. In The Rocking Horse Winner Hester , the mother of Paul, wants a rich life that her husband cannot provide for her and because of that she considers her self unlucky It's what causes you to have money. If you're lucky you have money. That's why it's better to be born lucky than rich. If you're rich, you may lose your money. But if you're lucky, you will always get more money ,I can't be if I married and unlucky husband( Lawrence, 77). Hester unhappy with the life she is living blames her luck on her husband and because she is self absorbed in her misery she neglects her kids only she herself knew that at the centre of her heart was a hard little place that could not feel love (Lawrence,76). This is not the case with The Jewels while M. Lantin is upset with his wifes action he is not up set to the same extent as Hester is about her husband he was incredibly happy with her , six years after their meeting he loved her more than the first day ( Maupassant, 8) . the only thing M. Lantin did not enjoy about his wife is when she drags him to the opera He eventually begged her to go with some of her lady acquaintance who would bring her back afterward ( Maupassant,8). Neglect occurs through people being unsatisfied with each others actions. This is the case in both these stories.

When neglecting their loved ones Hester and M. Lantin are oblivious to their actions , The Rocking Horse Winner Hester was unaware of Paul gambling. Paul's gambling addiction was triggered by a will to satisfy his mother who reminds him that she is living an unlucky life because they have no money, believing he has luck he thinks he can satisfy his mother while at the same time stop the voices in his house I started it for mother. She said she had no luck, because father is unlucky, so I thought if I was lucky, I might stop whispering ( Lawrence, 83). Paul embraces his luck by betting on horses at the derby and wins big money on his bets and only bets if he is sure about the winning horse we're all right when we're sure ( Lawrence,82). While M. Lantins wife's has a different type of addiction an addiction that seems very strange to M.Lantin, her addiction to imitation jewelery. Even though M. Lantin with his salary could not buy real jewelery he was very critical about what was thought to be his his wife's fake jewelery collection you have the tastes of a gypsy and often calling her collection Junk ( Maupassant, 8). only to discover after his wife's death that the jewelery he mocked was worth a fortune and that she got those jewels from a third person. Both Hester and M. Lantin demonstrate how self absorbed in their own lives they did not realize what was happening to there loved ones.

Even though negligence allowed Paul and M. Lantins wife to do what they both loved, they both ended up dying because of this. Paul finding happiness in giving his mother happiness found himself gambling more and more to a point where he started to lose and got frustrated The Grand National had gone by : he had not known and had lost a hundred pounds .Summer was at hand. He was in agony for the Lincoln. But even for the Lincoln he didn't know and he lost fifty pounds. He became wild eyed and strange (Lawrence,86). Paul has become so obsessed with winning the Derby it eventually drove him crazy to a point where he thought riding his rocking horse will help him pick the right horse to bet on I never told you, mother , that if I can ride my horse , and get there, the I'm absolutely sure oh, absolutely! Mother , did I ever tell you? I am lucky. ( Lawrence, 90). all this madness eventually led to Paul having a brain fever and dying after being in a coma. While M. Lantins wife was neglected by M. Lantin, she went to the opera with her friend , it was because of going to the opera on a cold day in winter she came down with a terrible illness which led to her death When she had been to the opera one evening in the winter, she returned home shivering with cold. The next day she began to cough. Eight days later she died from inflammation of the lungs ( Lawrence,9). Though they had the freedom to do what they wanted in the end even with all the money and jewels they had, they were not alive to enjoy their riches.

Ultimately both Paul and M. Lantins wife both lost their lives because of being neglected by their loved ones. Though Paul's death had more to do with being neglected than M. Lantins wife. While in The Jewels M. Lantins wife passed away after going to the opera and getting cold because her husband chose not to go with her becasue he was to tired. Paul dyed of a brain fever after going crazy trying to win bets through derbies. Through neglecting both Hester and M. Lantin got rich at the cost of their loved ones
