Island is the story of Will Farnaby, a journalist shipwrecked on the fictional island of Pala. There he discovers a culture masterminded by a utopian Scottish scientist and a native Raja. The two have worked hard to create a society engineered to work communally toward the happiness of the group. The society incorporates elements of Eastern and Western culture. The novel explores themes common to Dystopian fiction, including drug culture, group living, and child-rearing.
