He suspects sleepwalking Clithero, follows him and eventually confronts him. Clithero did not commit the murder, though he did commit another one. One night Edgar awakes, trapped in a cave. He rescues a kidnapped girl and kills warring Indians only to discover that he has been sleepwalking and that Waldengrave was murdered by the Indians.
