The Bean Trees is the story of Taylor Greer, a Kentuckian woman, and Turtle, her foundling Cherokee ward. Turtle is placed in Taylor's car by a Cherokee woman as Taylor passes through Arizona on a voyage of self-discovery. Taylor raises the child as her own and the two women form a close bond through many difficult trials and Turtle's ongoing crisis of identity concerning her Native ethnicity and her white mother figure.
